  • What is the OCCLC program like?
At OCCLC, we offer Christ-centered learning that beautifully complements your homeschooling. Your child will attend engaging classes twice a week, providing structured learning in essential subjects like English Language Arts and Math, while you remain the primary educator.
  • Where are OCCLC’s locations?
OCCLC has two locations: Harbor Light and WestGrove. Our facilities provide safe, nurturing, and well-equipped learning environments. Harbor Light Church: 1734 Orange Avenue, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 Calvary Chapel WestGrove: 12832 Knott St, Garden Grove, CA 92841
  • How do I enroll my child?
Our enrollment process is straightforward: Application: Complete and submit our application form. Assessment: Your child will participate in an assessment to help us understand their current academic level. Registration: Once the assessment is complete and reviewed, we will guide you through the final registration steps.
  • How do you weave Christian values into the learning experience?
Faith is at the heart of OCCLC! At both our Harbor Light and WestGrove locations, each day begins with a time of Worship and/or Bible study, where all students and staff come together. We also incorporate prayer throughout the day, including before meals. Many of our students actively participate in memorizing Bible verses, fostering their spiritual growth. Additionally, we cherish opportunities to celebrate Christian holidays with special programs and activities.
  • What kind of curriculum do you use?
Harbor Light Location: We utilize the well-regarded The Good & the Beautiful curriculum for both Language Arts and Math, known for its engaging content and focus on strong foundational skills. WestGrove Location: Currently, WestGrove uses Our Father's World for English Language Arts and Saxon Math. Please note that the Math curriculum for the upcoming school year is being carefully considered to ensure the best learning experience for our students. We'll keep you informed of any updates.
  • What are the class sizes like? Will my child receive individual attention?
We believe in providing a supportive and focused learning environment. Our typical class size is up to 8 students per teacher. To further enhance individual support, we also have assistants who work alongside our teachers as needed.
  • What are the qualifications of your teachers?
While private learning centers in California have different requirements than traditional schools, we are committed to providing quality instruction. We are proud to have a credentialed teacher on our team who actively supports our learning centers by monitoring student progress, offering valuable professional development to our teachers, and serving as a resource for parents seeking effective teaching strategies.
  • How will you determine my child's academic placement?
We utilize a comprehensive approach to assess your child's academic level. This includes curriculum-based assessments, various hard-copy evaluations, and an online diagnostic tool (IXL). By gathering information from multiple sources, we can accurately place your child in the curriculum and instruction that best suits their needs. A key benefit of our program is that students are placed based on their academic understanding, not just their age. This promotes more effective learning and reduces frustration or boredom. If a student is working below their age-related grade levels, we will collaborate with you to explore strategies for acceleration. Conversely, if a student is academically advanced, we will provide appropriately challenging curriculum and instruction.
  • How do you handle students with different learning styles or needs?
We are committed to making every effort to accommodate diverse learning styles and needs when possible. However, due to the nature of our program and staffing, we may not be equipped to meet the requirements of every unique situation. We encourage you to contact us with specific details about your child's needs so we can have an open and honest conversation about whether OCCLC can be a supportive learning environment for them.
  • Will my child have opportunities to socialize with other students?
Absolutely! Social interaction is an important part of the OCCLC experience. Your child will connect with peers through worship, small group learning, shared snack and lunch times, and recess. Many of our families also build friendships that extend beyond the learning center, organizing park visits, church activities, sports, and other enriching experiences together.
  • Do you offer any extra learning activities or enrichment programs?
Yes! We believe in nurturing a well-rounded child. We've offered a variety of enrichment classes such as Dance, Spanish, Science, History, and Art, often led by talented parents or community members.
  • What are the costs involved?
Our fees are structured to provide affordable, quality education: Application: A one-time, non-refundable fee of $150.00 per child. This covers both initial and ongoing assessments to ensure your child is receiving appropriate support. Registration: A one-time, non-refundable fee of $100.00 per child. This secures your child's spot in our program and helps offset curriculum costs. Monthly Tuition: $195.00 per child.
  • What are the daily schedules for each location?
Harbor Light: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM. WestGrove: Tuesdays and Thursdays, 8:15 AM - 2:30 PM; Wednesdays (Enrichment), 8:30 AM - 12:00 PM.
  • What measures do you take to ensure my child's safety?
The safety of our students is our top priority. All adults who work directly with children undergo thorough interviews, fingerprinting, and background checks to ensure a safe and trustworthy environment.
  • How will you communicate with me about my child and program updates?
Our primary method of quick communication is usually via text message. For more detailed information or email updates, we will typically send a text alert to prompt you to check your email. Additionally, we value personal connection, and parents and staff often have brief conversations during student drop-off and pick-up times.
  • How does OCCLC assist with California's homeschooling legal requirements?
Our Site Directors are knowledgeable resources and can help answer your questions about the Private School Affidavit (PSA), such as where to find the form and when it needs to be submitted.
  • How do you support me as a homeschooling parent?
We see ourselves as your partner in education! When you first join OCCLC, we provide a conference to discuss your child's assessment results and how we can best support their learning. We are always available to provide updates on your child's progress in the format that works best for you – whether in person, via Zoom, or email. We also share effective and efficient teaching techniques to support your homeschooling at home. Because you are your child's primary teacher, our staff maintains regular communication with parents to ensure a cohesive learning experience between home and our center.
